Coal mining as such was unknown before the Europeans arrived in India . यूरोपियनों के भारत में आने से पहले तक यहां पर कोयला खदान का काम एक प्रकार से अंजान सा था .

However , more important mineral industries were coming into existence , not to mention the phenomenal growth of coal mining . फिर भी कोयला खानों के अप्रत्याशित विकास का तो जिक्र ही क़्या , और अधिक ख़निज उद्योग अस्तित्व में आ रहे थे .

Coal mining was a very loosely organised industry , though this was somewhat inevitable by the very nature of its operations . कोयला खदान एक प्रकार से असंगठित प्रकार का उद्योग था यद्यपि इसकी कार्यप्रणाली को देखते हुए यह स्वाभाविक और अनिवार्य-सा था .

In point of time , coal and railway development preceded industrialisation in Europe , and again , railway construction followed coal mining . समय रहते , यूरोप में कोयले और रेलवे का विकास , औद्योगिकरण से पहले ही हो गया था और कोयला खानों के बाद रेलवे निर्माण का काम हुआ .

During the first three decades of modern industry in India , the only three industries which were well established were cotton textiles , jute textiles and coal mining . भारत में आधुनिक उद्योग के पहले तीन दशकों में केवल तीन ही उद्योग , सूती वस्त्र , जूट वस्त्र , और कोयला खान , ऐसे थे जो उचित तरीके से स्थापित थे .
